Biography of Peter Lyon

HERITAGE NO : 155
Peter Lyon by SHS

New Boy in the St. Helens Newspaper [13 September 1906] heaped praise on this player ['a shining light'] after seeing him in an A Team game against Liverpool City at Knowsley Road and wondered when his chance would come of a stab at the seniors. There was a bit of a wait before this was to come true, however and Peter made his debut at home against Widnes on 3rd November. He played on the left wing, with David Traynor as his centre. Saints won 10-7 and the saints celebrated by wearing brand new jerseys of red, amber and black hoops. The local press was enthusiastic: 'Both Winter [winger] and Lyon showed up well when they had anything to do. Winter, I am convinced, is a capital player if he could get a chance, while Lyon, for a novice ' he has only played the rugby game this season ' performed in first class style. It was positively exhilarating to see him dodge his way through instead of trying to force a way through by brute strength'.

In his next game, against Salford, at the Willows, Saints went down 13-26, but Lyon excelled with two tries. New Boy in the St. Helens Newspaper: 'The young recruit, Lyon, improved on his initial display and the smart manner in which he obtained his two tries showed that he has the makings of a rare good player. Lyon has the advantage over the majority of present day players of being able to put plenty of brainy work into his efforts and if he could continue as he has been, there is a future before him'.

Peter's last of his 10 matches for the club was on 14th September 1907 against Bradford at Knowsley Road. Saints lost 9-14 and Peter played at left centre. Jack Manchester was his winger. There the trail goes cold. If anyone can provide any further information, or an image, we would like to hear from you. Peter lived in Owen Street, St Helens in 1911 and worked as a Miner Drawer. He died in Wigan in September 1934 at the age of 55.
