Biography of Dennis Lyon

HERITAGE NO : 883
Dennis Lyon by Adrian Lawrenson

A forceful back rower and related to the great Alex Murphy, Dennis was signed from the St Helens ‘B’ team on 12 March 1966, where he played five games for the seniors, kicking one goal and left the club in 1973 to go to Warrington. Dennis made his first team debut in what was almost exclusively a reserve team in the win at Batley on 16th April 1972, three days before Saints won through to Wembley by beating Warrington in the semi-final replay. His last match was in an injury-ravaged Saints team on 16 December 1973 in the 28-2 victory over Whitehaven in the John Player Trophy.

Whet mere statistics do not relate is the value of a salt of the earth player who was an A team stalwart for seven years and content to play at that level that suited him. How many young players, I wonder, who made their first faltering steps in the Saints A team were guided by Dennis with his considerable experience of professional rugby league?

Perhaps with the long-overdue return of reserve grade rugby league in 2020, more players like Dennis will have a valuable role to play in the development of our sport at top level.
