Biography of Paddy Loughlin |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 835 Terry Loughlin by Alex Service Terry, or rather Paddy, as he is universally known was an uncompromising front-rower who began his professional rugby league career at Salford, joining them from Thatto Heath amateurs. After a spell in the A team, he made his debut on 2nd December 1961 at Dewsbury, with his final game for the Red Devils on 29th January 1966 against Workington at Weaste. It would appear that Paddy’s on-field disciplinary record was instrumental in him leaving Salford and he duly came back home to the Saints, after 38 appearances in total for the Reds. Paddy made his debut in the red vee against Rochdale Hornets during the 1966-67 campaign, making his final bow in the First Team in 1968-69 against Barrow in the Floodlit Trophy competition. The front row for that match was Warlow, Karalius and Loughlin. Unfortunately, the Saints went down to defeat in Cumbria by 11-18. He went on to play with great success for Blackpool Borough, with several players who had St Helens origins, such as scrum half Allan Bishop. His sons Paul and Michael have both played rugby league, with Michael playing for Saints’ Academy and later for Pilks Recs. Elder brother Paul became a stalwart at centre for St Helens and Great Britain, before leaving Knowsley Road as part of the deal that brought Paul Newlove to St Helens. As for Paddy, he is remembered as the licensee of the Liverpool Arms and as steward of the Sprayhurst club in Boundary Road. Together with Paul, he regularly attends events connected with St Helens RFC Players Association. Thanks to Paddy, Paul Loughlin and Graham Morris for their help with this biography. |
