Biography of Paul Loughlin

HERITAGE NO : 967
Paul Loughlin by Dave Dooley:

This talented footballer was signed from St Helens Colts in the summer of 1983. Equally comfortable at full back or in the centres he was a superb signing for the Saints. He evolved into a classic `service centre` with an impeccable timing for the money ball out to the winger. He also possessed a great side-step and was one of the most accurate kickers to have played at Knowsley Road. He made his debut as a seventeen year old coming on as substitute in the 31 points to 20 home victory over Oldham on April 1st., 1984. He even managed to land a goal in the same match. Who would have thought that Paul would be adding another 2002 points to that modest beginning in his long career with the Saints. Another couple of outings in the same season indicated the confidence that coach Billy Benyon had in the youngster.

In the highly successful 1984/5 campaign Paul played a few cameo roles as the more experienced players brought home the silverware to Knowsley Road. He made two starts against Hunslet (away) and Oldham (home). In the latter Paul booted over 5 goals. Paul also came on as substitute against Workington Town and Warrington. His first real run in the first team came at the start of the 1985/6 season when Paul had a run of the first eight games of the season at full back. This provided Paul with an opportunity to refine his defensive positional play and skilfully link up with the Saints attack. However, it was at the end of the campaign that Paul really established himself as a regular centre in the first team. He also acquired the goal-kicking role at this time and finished the campaign with four tries and 43 goals for a total of 102 points. This haul included his first try for the club in the 24 points to 14 home victory over Swinton.

It was interesting to note that Paul`s new responsibilities coincided with a record run in the league which lasted from February to Boxing Day 1986. Within this period Paul made a real impact with some sensational displays. The pinnacle of these achievements came on the 14th of September 1986 when Saints and Paul rewrote the record books on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The club established a record score with a 112 points to nil victory. Paul`s amazing contribution was 2 tries and 16 goals for a total of 40 points. This gave Paul new individual club records for goals and points in a single match. By the end of the season Paul had collected 392 points for the season from 9 tries and 178 goals. Moreover, his smart centre play had provided many more touchdowns for Barry Ledger. The 1987 Challenge Cup Final against Halifax would have stitched up the perfect season for Paul but it was not to be. Despite Loughlin scoring a superb swerving second half try as part of a brave Saints comeback, Saints eventually lost out to Halifax by the odd point in 37.

Paul continued to ride on a crest of the wave in the following season (1987/8). In the 1988 John Player Trophy Final Paul established a national profile with a sizzling display of centre play and cool kicking. He scored two tries and kicked three goals in a dominant display. One of the touchdowns started on the Saints right hand flank and glided infield like a ballroom dancer beating opponent after opponent and diving over close to the posts. Paul`s display, a magnificent second half defensive stint and Neil Holding`s cheeky drop goal meant that Captain Cooper held aloft the trophy following a nerve jangling 15 points to 14 victory. Towards the end of the season Saints were pressing for the Division One Championship when Shane Cooper returned to his homeland. Saints promptly lost three successive games to Wigan, Widnes and Leeds and consequently had to settle for the runners up spot in the league. Paul Loughlin`s form had caught the eye of the international selectors and so it was that he found himself on the aeroplane at the end of the season as part of the Australasian Tour. He played a crucial part in defeating Australia in the Third Test in Sydney to place international rugby league back in the limelight. His dancing run and side-step set up Henderson Gill for an 80 metres length of the field try. After that Paul was a fixture in the Great Britain set up for the next four years.

The 1988/9 season began for Paul with high hopes of leading the Saints to bigger and better things. However, this campaign brought about a reality check for all at Knowsley Road as Saints had a miserable season finishing seventh in the league and being whitewashed by the old enemy Wigan at Wembley. Paul`s efforts could not be faulted with a return of 5 tries and 109 goals from 33 matches. This haul included his 1000th point for the club which he secured with the boot in an away defeat at Wigan.

The 1989/90 season witnessed Paul up to his old tricks again in the Lancashire Cup. In the first round he scored 30 points from 11 goals and two tries in a 78 points to 10 demolition of Runcorn Highfield. This season was by far his best tryscoring effort with a haul of 17 tries including braces against Wakefield, Hull KR, Leigh and Whitehaven. When added to a fabulous 135 goals this generated a total of 338 points for Mr Loughlin. On the general club front the experimentation with player combinations continued with the team playing no fewer than 36 players over the campaign. Although ending up close to the top of the league as the highest scorers, some inconsistencies were denying the team and Paul of the big prizes.

Paul made 27 appearances in the 1990/1 season accruing 220 points on the way. His most productive match came in the match against Warrington when he scored two tries and kicked 7 goals in a 62 points to 16 fusing of the `Wires`. The Saints rattled up the points unfortunately the side was defensively stretched in many games and 11 losses in the league left Cooper`s men in sixth position in the league. After a fabulous performance in the 19 points to 2 semi-final win over Widnes in the Challenge Cup semi-final, Paul got the nod to start the Challenge Cup Final against the old enemy. However, Saints fell at the final hurdle as Wigan held on to a handy half time lead to prevail by 13 points to 8. Yet again Paul had left a Final on the losing side. That season Great Britain entertained Australia in a test series that they very nearly won. Paul was one of the leading stars and scored a couple of tries in the series only to be outdone by his old mentor Meninga!

Paul was injured at the start of the 1991/2 season and this thwarted his ambition for a winner`s medal. The fact that Saints went on to win the 1991 Lancashire Cup by beating Rochdale Hornets in the Final had a cruel edge to it, considering the heroics Paul had played in the same competition over the years. He was out for most of the season only returning for the last eight matches. Nevertheless, Paul still managed to end the season with 5 tries and 40 goals though clearly disappointed at the games he had missed. However, this late return to the fray had secured Paul his second successive Australasian Tour which departed in the summer of 1992.

Unfortunately Paul had to return from the Tour with a serious injury which kept him out of the game until December 1992. In just his third game back gave one of his finest displays in the Boxing Day match against Wigan in 1992. He was involved play all over the pitch as Saints whipped the boys from Wigan by a fabulous score-line of 41 points to 6. Paul netted six goals as part of the celebration. Everyone felt that the balance of power was finally shifting westwards over Billinge Lump after that game but at the end of the season Saints lost out to Wigan on points difference at the top of the table following an 8 points all drawn match at Central Park. Finally, some consolation came however in the last match of the season as Paul and the Saints defeated Wigan by 10 points to 4 in the 1993 Premiership Final at Old Trafford. That day `Lockers` produced another superb all round game and at last he had another winner`s medal to polish! Paul had the pleasure of finishing off a cross-field passing movement by sliding over the whitewash for the decisive try of the contest.

The loss of Gary Connolly in the backs and Kevin Ward in the pack was too great for the following campaign as Saints slumped to eighth place in the league. Paul had very much a stop- start affair as the team struggled to gain any consistency. At the end of the 1993/4 season, the Saints were again disappointed to be staring at an empty trophy cabinet.

This was very much the end of the road for Paul`s goalkicking especially as Saints had recruited a red-hot and confident Bobbie Goulding for the 1994/5 season. Paul played in 21 matches that year and returned ten single tries over the campaign. He was still a potent threat with the ball in his hands and his service was always reliable.

The acquisition of players of the calibre of Scott Gibbs, Apollo Perelini and Bobbie Goulding showed that the Saints were serious about mounting a determined bid to end Wigan`s monopoly of the Rugby League silverware. The announcement of moves to revolutionise the game with a new summer era in a fully professional context signalled the end of Paul`s Knowsley Road career. At twenty nine years of age and with bags of rugby left in his legs In November 1995, Paul reluctantly departed the Knowsley Road scene as part of the world record transfer deal, which brought Paul Newlove to the Saints. He enjoyed several highly successful seasons with Bradford Bulls, which culminated in two Challenge Cup Final defeats at the hands of St. Helens in 1996 and 1997 and the winning of the Super League Trophy in Super League II.

A summary of Paul`s career makes very satisfying reading. He became a regular choice for Great Britain and rewrote the Saints` record books. His 2004 points make him the third greatest points collector of all time at the Club (behind the legendary Kel Coslett). The 842 goals make him fourth in goalkicking charts (behind Kel Coslett, Sean Long and George Lewis) and his 40 points in the aforementioned match against Carlisle make him the individual record points scorer for one match. Moreover, Paul will long be remembered for his classical centre play and even temperament on the field of play.

In his mid 50s Paul could be seen playing for Tommy Makinson's Legends team against a Steve Prescott Foundation team on 5th December 2021 at Ruskin Drive. He has also played cricket for the Saints Past Players - a talented sportsman for sure!
