Biography of Freddie Little

HERITAGE NO : 19
Freddie was a no nonsense scrum half who played for the Saints in the early years of the Northern Union. He moved from Belfast in the late 1880s and joined the Saints just prior to them establishing their new ground at Knowsley Road. Up to the days of the Northen Union Freddie played 147 matches and netted 12 tries for the rapidly improving St Helens RFC.

Following the establishment of the Northern Union in 1895 Freedie played 48matched for the Club including the first Challenge Cup Final in 1897 when the Saints lost to Batley by 10 points to 3. Freddie scored two tries for the Saints in matches against Salford and Swinton. He played his last official match for the club against Stockport in April 1899.

The subsequently story of Freddie Little and his family demonstrates how hard yet fragile life was in St Helens in the early part of the twentieth century. Freddie married Sintelliner Mary Ellen Birchall in 1896 when his rugby career was at its zenith. By 1898 they had a daughter Minnie and the 1901 Census finds them living at 42 Lascelles Street, St Helens. Freddie`s job was reported to be a Labourer in a Glassworks. By that time his rugby playing days in the Saints first team were over.

In 1911, the Little family were resident at 1 Park Road, St Helens. Freddie was still working in a Glassworks but his job title was Sheet Glass Counter. The Census that year indicated an addition to the household, namely Frederick Charles Junior (Born in 1903). Sometime later the family moved to 165 Charles Street, St Helens.

In March 1925, Minnie Little died aged just 27. Six years later, on April the 5th. 1933, Freddie died aged 61. The probate reference cited an amount of just over '315 to be left to his Mary Ellen, a tidy amount in those days but of course no consolation to his widow. The passing of Frederick Junior in June 1936 at the tender age of 33 left a solitary Mary Ellen Little. Mrs Little passed away in 1951 aged 79. The whole family are buried together in St Helens Cemetery.
