Biography of James Liptrot

HERITAGE NO : 431
James Liptrot by Alex Service

This player was a loose forward who played just two First Team matches. We know that he signed for the club in October 1934 and lived in Sutton Manor. He scored a try on his debut, against Leigh at Knowsley Road in a league match on 23rd February 1935 and made just one more appearance, in a league encounter at Swinton on 28th September 1935. Saints lost heavily on that occasion 3-46. He was a Colliery Tunnel Man and in 1939 he was living in Milton Street, St Helens. He died in April 1984, aged 68.

In fact, this address gives us a clue as to further rugby league links. We believe that he is the brother of Bill Liptrot, who was a well known front rower with the St Helens Recreation team of the mid 1930s, who played for Lancashire. Truly a sporting family.

If anyone can provide us with any further information about James, especially an image, please contact us.
