Biography of Paul Leyland

HERITAGE NO : 1162
Paul Leyland by Alex Service

A former Broadway High School pupil, Paul was initially a loose forward who could play with equal effectiveness at centre. He enjoyed a successful representative career as a schoolboy and joined the Saints from the Portico Panthers Amateur club. He was a stalwart of the Under 21s for several years, where he played in the front row and made one appearance for the First Team and a memorable one indeed. The Saints had to play Catalans Dragons at Canet Plage in 2006 the week before Wembley and sent a squad consisting initially of reserves. Paul excelled himself that evening, as the Saints nearly, ever so nearly pulled off what would have been the most sensational Super League victory of them all in context. They were thwarted by the brilliance of scrum-half Stacey Jones, who opened up a tiring defence in the last minute. I will never forget how distraught he was after the final hooter after putting so much effort in, like the rest of his team-mates. A great club man at Knowsley Road.
