Biography of Jimmy Leyland

HERITAGE NO : 399
Jimmy Leyland by Alex Service

A resident of both Fir Street and Scholes Lane [Thatto Heath] during his Saints career, Jimmy Leyland played in six First Team matches for the club. Nicknamed Whisper his first was against Widnes at the start of the 1932-33 season, when the visitors lost 10-12 at Naughton Park. Jimmy was in the back row that afternoon, with Jack Arkwright and Walter Groves, the former scrum-half, who turned out at loose forward. Jimmy seems to have been basically a member of the A Team, who was able to fill in when required. His last match for the club was at Swinton, on 15th September 1934, when the Saints were defeated by 2-19. The back row that day was Leyland, Lemon and Butler. Outside rugby Jimmy was Collier and in 1939 he was living in Elephant Lane, St Helens. He died in St Helens in June 1977, aged 66. Whisper was the father of Fred Leyland who played prop forward for the Saints in the late fifties and early sixties. If anyone has any further details, we would like to hear from you.
