Biography of Howard Lewis

HERITAGE NO : 648
Howard Lewis by Alex Service

A ginger-haired second-row forward, Howard played Rugby Union for Brigend and Pontypridd before signing for the Saints. He made his official debut on Christmas Day 1946 against Liverpool Stanley, (16-17) one of three matches for the club in four days! On Boxing Day, the side played Wigan in front of 20,000 (lost 9-11) and on 28th December went over the Pennines to Huddersfield, where they again were defeated.

In fact, Howard was already well known to St. Helens supporters. He first played for the club against Workington Town on 20th October 1946 and was given the pseudonym Bennett. He played against Salford on 14th December, once more under his assumed name, before his signing for the club was sanctioned. A rangy second-rower, at six feet in height and almost 14 stones, he was 25 years of age and had seen active service in Northern Europe during the Second World War. Like another Saints` forward in the First World War, George Farrimond, he subsequently received the Military Medal for his outstanding bravery during a fierce engagement with the enemy at Wilreit in the Netherlands on 19th September 1944 and was presented with the award by General Montgomery himself. He had actually enlisted in August 1937.

Howard found that competition for places at Knowsley Road increased with the likes of fellow Welshman George Parsons and Len Aston at the club and he went on to sign for Whitehaven in January 1949.

He passed away in March, 1990, in Whitehaven.
