Biography of Andy Leathem

HERITAGE NO : 1056
Andy Leathem by Alex Service

Signed from Crosfields in 1994, Andy made exceptional progress as a young front-rower, making his debut against Wakefield trinity on 2nd February 1995. The Saints were then coached by Eric Hughes and Andy did not look out of place, augmenting a front-row which included Adam Fogerty, Keiron Cunningham and Apollo Perelini. St.Helens won the match at a canter 56-14 and in those pre-Super League days, Andy was one of just two players on the interchange bench. Just over five thousand watched the game. The Saints team lined up as follows: Prescott, Hunte, Lyon, Loughlin, Elia, Martyn, Goulding, Fogerty, Cunningham, Perelini, Dwyer, Morley, Cooper. Subs Griffiths, Leathem.

Twelve months later the Saints were better prepared than most to end the unhealthy domination of Wigan by winning the inaugural European Super League competition. Andy played 14 times during the campaign, including a place in the squad at Wembley in the fantastic 32-22 clash with Bradford Bulls, which remains one of the greatest-ever finals. A forceful and quietly aggressive member of the engine room, Andy was to make a further 18 appearances in 1997, but injury prevented him from making a second Wembley final, against Bradford. He struggled with injury somewhat and played his last match for the Saints at home to Warrington on 26th April 1998. The home team won 36-14 and was changed considerably from the team in which he made his debut four years previously:

Atcheson, Chris Smith, Damien Smith, Newlove, Sullivan, Long, Goulding, Leathem, Hammond, O'Neill, Joynt, Davidson, Haigh. Subs: Pickavance, Busby, Goldspink, Anderson

Andy continued his Super League career at Warrington during the 1999 campaign and finished his career with a spell at Leigh.
Overall, Andy was a popular player at Knowsley Road and it is such a shame that injury blunted his career. He had a sure tackling technique, hence his nickname 'Gripper' and played a game in Australia for Saints after being bitten by a poisonous spider, but that's another story!
