Biography of Ken Large

Ken Large was an exciting centre and winger for the club playing over 100 matches in the late fifties and early sixties. Born in St Helens, he signed from St Helens RUFC on 18th. September 1957. Ken made his debut against Huddersfield in the 35 to 13 points away victory on the 5th. October 1957. Ken greatly impressed by scoring a try and showing up well in defence. That season Ken went on to score at the rate of almost one try per game, notching 21 tries from 23 matches.

The following season realised just 7 tries from 14 matches as a wealth of talent vied for limited places in the sparkling Saints three-quarters. In the 1958/9 Championship Semi-Final against Oldham, Ken replaced an injured Vollenhoven on the right wing and played a blinder scoring a hat-trick of tries in the process. During the following week, he had every reason to feel dismayed as Jim Sullivan announced the team to play Hunslet in the Final and Ken`s name was nowhere to be found!

The following season (1959-60) saw Ken replace Duggie Greenall as the regular centre to Tom Van Vollenhoven. Ken`s timely passes helped Voll to another try scoring bonanza whilst Ken contributed fully with 28 touchdowns and two goals from 36 games. The following season Ken scored a hat-trick against Workington Town as part of a 21 points to 6 at Derwent Park.

Ken won a Lancashire Cup winners medal when the Saints defeated Swinton by 15 points to 9 in front of a crowd of over 31 000 at Central Park in the 1960 Final. He repeated the pleasure in the same competition against the same opposition one season later, this time the victory score was 25 points to 9 and Ken weighed in with a try.

In the 1961 Challenge Cup Final Ken was heavily involved in the most memorable Wembley try of all time. The match was delicately balanced as Saints played the ball from close to their own line. Ken was involved in a near length of the field interpassing extravaganza with Tom Van Vollenhoven. As Ken was about to be cover tackled by the desperate Eric Ashton he flipped up a characteristically perfect pass to Voll to run the ball over the try-line and behind the posts. As Ken lay in the lush Wembley turf, he could doubtless feel Rugby League immortality burning through the famous white with a red vee jersey, worn by the Club for the first time that day.

Ken Large played 136 matches for the club. He scored 83 tries and kicked 27 goals for an aggregate score of 303 points.

The 1962/63 season was a transitional one for the Saints as the Club felt a need to build a new side to continue to challenge for the game`s top honours. He was facing increased competition for a centre berth from Mick Sullivan, Keith Northey and Alan Briers. Ken only played one match for the club that season, a Western Divisional Championship match against Liverpool City on the 30th.of August, 1962 at the start of the `big freeze` season. Ken found himself transferred down the East Lancashire Road to continue his career with Leigh. [Heritage Number 711]

Ken died in April 1995, aged 55 and his death was registered in Knowsley. The Family Heritage Day in August 2019 was attended by the widow of Ken, Irene. The gallery shows Irene proudly displaying Kens Heritage Certificate.
