Biography of Chris Joynt

HERITAGE NO : 1037
Christopher Michael Joynt by Dave Dooley:

Back in the days when one`s body could withstand a Watersheddings` winter, I witnessed a match between a rampant Saints outfit and an ambitious Second Division Oldham. The date was the 24th.of November, 1991 in the second round of the Regal Trophy. I don`t honestly recall much from the match other than a scorching try scored by an up and coming forward named Chris Joynt. Receiving the ball twenty metres out Chris steamed on a diagonal path to outpace and out-power the Saints` defence and score right in front of my chosen stone cold terrace. Stan Edwards and I remarked simultaneously that he would be a cracking recruit to the Sainthood - how right we were!

Chris signed from Oldham on the ninth of September the following year and made his debut four days later in the 24 points to 12 league victory over Wakefield Trinity in front of 5546 spectators. After his debut Chris seemed to become a permanent fixture in the Saints side. His first points for the Club came in the 44 points to 18 romp over Huddersfield in the Regal Trophy preliminary round on the 27th. of October later the same year. On Boxing Day 1992 Chris scored a try in the famous 41 points to six drubbing of Wigan in front of 17495 jubilant fans at Knowsley Road. Saints were unlucky to lose out to Wigan on points difference in the Championship but the team did collect the Premiership trophy with a 10 points to 4 victory over the old enemy on a rain soaked Old Trafford pitch with Chris Joynt capping a great first season as a Saint by picking up the Harry Sunderland Trophy for an outstanding display.

In the 1993/94 season Chris started 35 matches and came on as substitute on one occasion to become the Saint with the most appearances that season. `Joynty` crossed the line on fourteen occasions. This included his only ever hat-trick for the Saints against Whitehaven in the 46 points to 4 home victory in the fifth round of the Challenge Cup. The following season Chris repeated the same number of tries in 31 appearances. 1993 also saw Chris take to the international stage coming off the bench in a Test Match against France. A sound performance pushed him into the Great Britain team that whitewashed the Kiwis 3-0 in the 1993 series. His international career was secure and he went on to collect 27 caps for Great Britain, six for England and four for Ireland.

In the summer break of 1995 Chris continued his rugby education with spell down under with Newcastle Knights. Here Chris had the opportunity to rub shoulders with international stars like Paul Harragon and the Johns brothers under the tutelage of Mal Reilly. Joynty returned focused and refreshed ready for the short Centennial Season and the birth of the Super League era. The fully professional game suited the dedication and hard work of Chris Joynt. By the time Saints had acquired Paul Newlove, the Club had put together a side that would launch the greatest era in the history of the Saints.

The back-to-back Wembley triumphs over Bradford in the 1996 and 1997 Challenge Cup Finals were major triumphs for Chris and the Club. Although the former was probably the greatest Challenge Cup Final in the history of the game, the latter highlighted the class of Chris Joynt who scored a magnificent try, taking a timely Tommy Martyn switch pass on the angle, and storming 20 metres to score the try that broke the Bradford resistance. As Saints romped to the first Super League Championship in 1996, Chris was the cornerstone of the solid Saints` pack and established his reputation as a prolific tackler as well as a strong running second row forward. These performances were rewarded when Chris was appointed Club captain that same year.

In 1999, Chris ran into a rich vein of try-scoring form with 16 tries in 31 appearances. This haul included four braces against Bradford, Halifax, Castleford and Gateshead. The sensational conclusion to that season saw Chris as a vital cog in the side that lifted the Championship by 8 points to 6 in the Grand Final at Old Trafford against Bradford. The following season was the first with Ian Millward in charge and resulted in a personal best ever tally of 18 tries from 34 appearances as Saints entertained the country in retaining their Super League Champions trophy. These tries included one of the greatest ever team tries on September 30th., 2000 when Saints defeated Bradford by 16 points to 11 with Chris completed a sensational move that covered over 150 metres, criss-crossing the pitch from their 20 metre zone with only two seconds left on the clock. Any spectator present would never forget the emotional roller coaster that accompanied `The Captain?s Seal`. The fact that Chris was on hand to finish off the move from 45 metres summed up his never say die attitude. The following two matches in the Grand Final run in saw Saints crush Wigan on their own patch by 54 points to 16 and beat the same team in the 2000 Grand Final at Old Trafford. The Final brought two tries to Chris - one strong close to the tryline dart that beat several opponents with nifty footwork and subtle feints, and the second a characteristic backing up on the inside a Sean Long break to complete a neat Saints move. As well as collecting the Trophy on behalf of the team, Chris also scooped up the Harry Sunderland Trophy, for a second time, as man of the match.

A few months later the Saints lifted the World Club Championship on a freezing February night at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton. Who would ever forget that early second half omen that greeted the Brisbane Broncos - snow and hail! At 18 points to six down, a kamikaze 20 metres dashing touchdown from Sean Long was soon, followed by a beautiful sidestepping of Sailor by Paul Newlove to find Captain Fantastic on the inside to score in front of the Saints faithful. Joynty then led a Saints defence that completely nullified the Broncos legendary attack with two drop goals from Long and Sculthorpe sealing the victory. Once again, Chris won the man of the match award.

The treble was then completed a few months later when Saints defeated Bradford in wicked weather at Twickenham in the 2001 Challenge Cup Final. At that point all three trophies were at Knowsley Road having been lifted by Chris Joynt. That campaign also saw Chris pass some personal milestones. The fourth round Challenge cup defeat of Wigan on February 10th, 2001 witnessed Joynty crossing the line for the 100th time in a Saints` jersey. On the last day of June that year Chris played his 87th. consecutive game for the Club breaking Harold Smith`s 72-year-old record. This impressive statistic illustrates Chris Joynt?s tremendous durability, fitness and determination to lead and play for the Saints.

Captain Joynt was on hand yet again in the 2002 season as Saints finished top of the league table and went on to lift the Super league Championship in the most dramatic of finales to any Rugby League Final. Locked at 18 points apiece with less than two minutes to go, Saints put together a sublime set of six tackles that moved the team from its own tryline into the Bradford twenty metres zone. The last play saw Sean Long execute the exemplary drop goal to break the Bradford hearts yet again.

At the end of the 2002 season Chris Joynt had played 331 times for the Saints scoring 117 tries. His 116th touchdown on the 23rd August against Halifax made Chris Joynt the club`s leading try scoring forward, breaking Billy Briers record that had stood for almost 90 years.

The 2003 camapign coincided with Chris` Testimonial Season. A fantastic success off the field was not match on the paddock as the Saints` failed to overcome rampant injuries and ill-fortune to end the season with an unusually empty Trophy Cabinet. At the end of the season Chris handed the captaincy over to Paul Sculthorpe and prepared for one last throw of the dice in a long and breathtakingly successful career.

The 2004 season was an Indian Summer for Chris. He was rock solid throughout the campaign and a constant performer especially in the spectacular first half of the season. The Challenge Cup road to Cardiff saw Saints collecting the biggest scalps in the game. A stunning away victory against Brdaford was followed up with home victories against Leeds and Hull both of whom showed tremendous resistance. A high flying and confident Huddersfield team were dumped by forty points in the glorious Warrington sunshine on semi-final day. Chris stood tall throughout this period exhibiting a steadying influence in attack and remained the cornerstone of the Saints` defence. The reward was a fourth Challenge Cup winners medal as Saints prevailed over the old enemy by 32 points to 16 in the Costa del Cardiff. With 18 rounds of the Super League completed saints were in second place in the ladder and challenging for another Championship title. However, the loss of Sean Long and Martin Gleeson through suspension and some key injuries meant an ineveitable fizzling out of the year for Chris and the Saints. Invariablt so many great careers do end with a whimper and not a fairy tale.

Tribute from Eamonn Mc Manus - Chairman, St.Helens Rugby League Club (2002 onwards)

"Chris Joynt towered over the most successful era in one of the best- known and loved rugby clubs in the world: St.Helens. As a captain, as a player and as a man, he combined all the attributes of a great sportsman and as an inspirational leader, Chris steered the Saints to a World Club Championship, four Super league titles and four Challenge Cup victories. He appeared 382 times for the Saints and collected 27 Great Britain caps. His personal records also breathtakingly included the most consecutive appearances for the Saints, the most appearances in Wigan versus Saints derby games and is Saints` highest-scoring forward in the club`s illustrious history.

Chris never gave anything less than 100% commitment to the cause and it was no coincidence that Saints` most successful period was synonymous with Chris Joynt.

In a time when top successful professional sportsmen were increasingly detached from their supporters and their communities, rugby league remained in touch with the people who supported it both locally and worldwide. Again, Chris typified this ethos of the game and of the Saints, and he involved himself whole-heartedly, but always modestly, in many worthy charitable causes and was, amongst other things, an ambassador for the Princes Trust. It reflected both his personality and his recognition that it was the people and the community that under-pinned and inspired his great rugby adventure."
