 HERITAGE NO : William made his debut for the Saints on the 17th March, 1916 in the home War Emergency League match against Runcorn. The Saints ran out victors by 19 points to 11 and William played in the pack. All matches during World War I were deemed to be �friendlies� because of the large number of young men who were in the armed forces. William went on the play another five matches in that season, three of which featured him in the scrum half role. In the 1916-17 campaign William played in the first ten matches in the forwards. His only match in the centres for the club resulted in a try for him in a home victory for the Saints over Barrow by 6 points to 3. The 1917-18 season was curtailed in January 1918 because of the lack of finances. William played five matches that season all in forward positions. His last match was against Widnes on January 31st., 1918. William�s grandson, Allan Jones, kindly forwarded the following details. He played for the Cardiff RU club in 1912-1913 and later on for Cardiff v New Zealand war team in 1918 and for Cardiff v Australia war team in the same year. He was also captain of the 6th Dragoon Guards in their match against the Royal Air Force war team 1916. Apparently he was also in the Police Force in St. Helens around 1915. | ||||
