Biography of Walter Jones |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 289 Walter Jones by SHS A local lad who lived in Brook Street when he signed for Saints, Walter made his debut on 27 August 1921 against Oldham at Knowsley Road. This was the infamous match when Scottish triallist full-back John McCallum, from Hawick , played his one and only game of Northern Union football before returning up north, realising that it just wasn’t for him. Saints lost 3-10 to a strong Oldham side and the critics were out in force amongst the large 10,000 crowd. This first match of the season promised much and the team did not deliver the goods overall. However, Walter’s debut seems to have been quite promising. He formed a back row partnership with Ned Higgins from Widnes and Thatto Heathen George Farrimond. According to the correspondent of the St Helens Reporter: “Jones played a good hard game” and was one of the better players in the team’s disappointing start. Fast forward to the home match against Bramley on 24 September and Walter is praised by the same correspondent after Saints’ 21-13 success: “None of the forwards played better than Jones, whose tackling was clean and neat and a wonder to behold.” He could score tries too and seemed to be a regular member of the team for years to come. But it was not to be. Walter played 38 times for the seniors, including clashed with Wigan and St Helens Recs and was also a member of the team that played against the visiting Australians on 23 November 1921, when the visitors won 8-16. His last game for the first team was against Leigh at Knowsley Road on 4 November 1922, when he was in the front row with Bill Clarey and Harry Heaton. He did continue for a while in the A team for a spell, but the trail then goes cold. It was a difficult time for the Saints, who had been gazumped by their local rivals the Recs, who had creamed off much of the local talent in the town at the end of the First World War. Yet Walter seemed to be a talented player who was well worth his place in the team. Family history research by Dave Dooley indicates that he worked as a Labourer in a Clay Shed and as a General Porter. In 1939 he was living in Sleaford Road, Huyton. His death is registered in Prescot in December 1971 at the age of 75. |
