 HERITAGE NO : 652 Glan Jones by Alex Service One of a number of Welshmen signed by the St.Helens club in the early post-war era, Glan Jones made his debut at scrum-half against Salford on 14th December 1946 in a 9-8 victory at Knowsley Road. The former Llanelli Rugby Union man gave a good service to his threequarters and was clever generally in the loose. He was also an extremely lively character on the field. Local lad Frank Tracey was his partner at standoff, with other Welsh imports, Elwyn Bowen (centre) and John Jones (second row) in the team. There was much competition in the halves at Knowsley Road in those days, with Frank Beesley and two more men from the Valleys, Steve Morris and Len Constance vying for places. Glan played his 17th and last game for the Saints at Oldham on 20th March 1948, when the visitors won 13-3. Ironically, Glan ended up at the Watersheddings shortly after, when he joined up with the likes of Norman Harris (Grandfather of Iestyn). Apparently Glan played for the newly-formed Llanelli Rugby League club for the 1949-50 season, together with his former Saints team-mate Elwyn Bowen. Dickie Jones, another ex-Saint was the Player-Manager. He died in Llanelli in July 1993, aged 75. |
