 HERITAGE NO : 677 Dicky Jones by Alex Service The Saints were team-building with a vengeance during the late 1940s and when they knew that Dicky Jones had fallen out with Swinton and had been put on the transfer list, they signed him for a then-club record fee of '2,000. Jones was a Welsh schoolboy international forward and later played for Glamorgan County before promotion to the full Welsh XV. At his club, Aberavon, he was regarded as one of the best forwards in Wales and his capture by the Saints was seen as quite a coup. Jones also played for the Welsh Rugby League XIII against France in Bordeaux. At the time of his signing he was aged 27, weight 14st 4lbs and just under 6 feet in height. He was a fiery player, who could play in any of the forward positions with equal effectiveness, although he was used frequently at number ten by the Saints. Unfortunately, his stay at Knowsley Road was rather brief and Jones managed to play in 25 matches, scoring 2 tries before being transferred to Hunslet.
