Biography of Berwyn Jones

HERITAGE NO : 859
Berwyn Jones by Alex Service

Born in Rhymney in South Wales, Berwyn Jones played rugby union for his local club, Rhymney RFC before achieving much success in the athletics field. He won the bronze medal in the mens four by one hundred metres relay at the European Championships at Belgrade in Yugoslavia in 1962. His team-mates were Alf Meakin, Ronald Jones and David Jones. Meakin also had a stab at professional rugby with Blackpool Borough.

Berwyn had been talked about as a possible selection for the Mexico Olympics in 1968 with success as a member of the Great Britain four by one hundred metres relay team and he held the British record over 100 metres (10.3 seconds). Ironically, his sporting career was to alter considerably in 1964 when he played as a trialist for Wakefield Trinity in matches against Doncaster and Huddersfield under the pseudonym Walker. His exceptional pace on the right flank certainly impressed the Wakefield club who signed him on full professional terms. Less than five months later he was playing for Great Britain against France at Perpignan and scored on his debut.

Berwyn was a member of the 1966 Australasian touring squad, although he did not make the team for any of the Test matches, with strong competition from Bill Burgess and Geoff Wrigglesworth. He moved to Bradford Northern for a 3,000 pound fee in 1967-68, where he was joined by his touring colleague Wrigglesworth and proceeded to score a career best 26 tries.

Berwyn moved on to St.Helens in 1969, but it was only a brief flirtation with the Knowsley Road club. He scored two tries before announcing his retirement, somewhat prematurely in the eyes of many observers. Berwyn passed away in Ross-on-Wye in January 2007, aged 66, after a long battle against illness.
