 HERITAGE NO : 743 David Johnson by Alex Service A local lad, signed from the Glovers Ropery junior team in July 1955, David Johnson made his First Team debut against Huddersfield at Knowsley Road on the right wing. Duggie Greenall was his centre. Yet he played further matches during the campaign in his more accustomed left wing position. A typical flying winger of his day, David played in 20 matches for the Saints, scoring 12 tries, including a three-pointer in his last game for the club, at Whitehaven, on 29th November 1958. Peter Fearis was his centre and the Saints won comfortably enough by 25-2. He later joined Hull, making his debut on 16th January 1960. David went on to make 35 appearances for the Black and Whites, scoring 15 tries, a fine ratio indeed. In fact, he went on to play at Wembley in the 1960 Challenge Cup final, as Hull took on Wakefield Trinity. David was on the left wing, with Nan Halafihi as his centre, the father of Nick, the Academy Coach at Knowsley Road in the early Super League days. Alas, the Humbersiders were smashed by a red-hot Wakefield Trinity team that day to the tune of 38-5, but at scrum-half for Hull was Tommy Finn, another St.Helens-born player who had also played for the Saints, in the early 1950s. | ||||
