Biography of Arthur Johnson

HERITAGE NO : 792
Arthur Johnson by Alex Service

A lad from Thatto Heath with a fine turn of pace and good all-round footballing ability, Arthur Johnson could play on either wing and also made an appearance at stand-off for the Saints. He made his debut on 17th February 1962 at home to Salford, scoring a try. The visitors were defeated 17-12, with van Vollenhoven scoring two from the other flank. Arthur wore the number 2 and 5 jersey during the campaign, yet competition was always strong on the flanks at Knowsley Road with the likes of Vollenhoven, Sullivan, Johnny Gaydon and Tom Pimblett.
Arthur played at stand-off during the game at Workington on 1st December 1962, proving he had more to offer than just pace. The Saints lost 5-8 that day and Arthur`s last appearance on the team-sheet came against Australia at Knowsley Road, when he was listed as substitute. I believe that substitutes were allowed as a agreed on the tour itself, some twelve months before they became officially recognised.
Arthur went on to give loyal service to Liverpool City, but was forced to retire somewhat prematurely as a result of a neck injury at the age of 28. Arthur worked as a miner and passed away in October 2017 at the age of 77. Thanks to Arthur`s son David who sent us a picture of Arthur scoring on his debut against Salford in February 1962. It is in the gallery.

And talking of David, he has kept the family sporting link going with his high-profile work in football broadcasting and will be a prominent figure in the forthcoming 2022 World Cup in Qatar as Broadcasting Liason Officer, a job that only around 350 people in the world are qualified to do. He has his own company, Johnson Media.
