Biography of Kevin Iro

HERITAGE NO : 1090
Kevin Iro by Alex Service

Born on 25 May 1968, Kevin Iro was approaching the veteran stage of his career when he was a shock signing by the St. Helens club before the 1999 campaign. A powerfully-built centre at over 15 stones, with the ability to burst through even the tightest defences, he could also off-load the ball in pressure situations, often using one hand, while he fended off the attentions of would-be tacklers. Iro was well-known to British fans, having enjoyed spells with Wigan and Leeds. He won three Challenge Cups with the Wigan club, together with two League Championships. After a spell with Manly, he joined Leeds, from 1992-1996, before joining the fledgling Hunter Mariners and later, Auckland Warriors on his way to Knowsley Road. He made his debut on the bench against Leeds at Headingley in a Challenge Cup tie, which the Saints lost 16-24.

Kevin was very much a big game player, who would score vital tries when they were most needed. He formed a dynamic centre pairing in the St. Helens team with Paul Newlove and Kevin went on to score a vital four-pointer in the 1999 Grand Final against Bradford Bulls at Old Trafford that levelled the scores at 6-6 prior to Sean Long’s magnificent winning conversion. Iro revelled in the Saints’ style of fast, open football as the team repeated their Grand Final success in 2000 by defeating deadly rivals Wigan 29-16 in a pulsating encounter. Iro’s vast experience was utilised in the World Club Championship victory over Brisbane Broncos early in the New Year and the Saints completed a fabulous treble success by beating Bradford Bulls at Twickenham in the Challenge Cup Final.

Universally known as The Beast, Iro will always be remembered in terms of the major finals. Yet he also produced some superb performances for St. Helens in the Super League competition, particularly against Wigan on Good Friday 2000, when he notched a scintillating hat-trick in a 38-14 triumph. His second included a fabulous dummy, totally bamboozling Wigan’s star full-back Radlinski. It was the Saints’ first home win against the Old Enemy since 1996, the first season of Super League.

Iro made 34 appearances for New Zealand during his career, playing in several Tests with his brother Tony. He announced his retirement from the New Zealand team and was selected as Captain for the Cook Islands in the 2000 World Cup competition. Although failing to qualify for the later stages, the side finished with a 22-22 draw against Lebanon, the first international to be played with the roof totally enclosed at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium! Always a name on the team-sheet to strike trepidation into the opposition, Kevin’s power was sadly missed at Knowsley Road following his retirement in 2001, where he had achieved so much in such a relatively short space of time.
