Biography of Sean Hoppe

HERITAGE NO : 1096
Sean Hoppe by Dave Dooley:

Sean was one of only two `legends` of Rugby League that played in the European Super League during the 2002 season. He, in New Zealand, along with Adrian Lam of Wigan Warriors, in Papua New Guinea, were household names, back home, due to their exploits on the paddock. In their careers, they provided some magical moments, which gave many spectators a great deal of pleasure.

Sean only joined St. Helens towards the end of the 1999 season. During the end of season `Play Offs` his vast experience proved vital as Saints, under Head Coach, Ellery Hanley went on to claim their first Super League Grand Final win, following a narrow 8 points to 6 victory over Bradford Bulls. A Three-quarter, throughout his career, `Shoppe` excelled when he was selected in the 2nd Row position and admitted that he thoroughly enjoyed his extra involvement in proceedings.

Versatility and durability are two of Sean`s greatest assets. His ability to slot into Saints` team, in just about any position has proved to be a vital ingredient in St. Helens` Super League successes at the turn of the century. In 2000, in the centre position, he was a try scorer in both the World Club Challenge and the Super League Grand Final. The disappointment Melbourne Storm`s 44 points to 6 hammering of St. Helens in January was erased when Saints retained their Super League crown in October that same year with a fine 29-16 victory over Wigan Warriors.

In 2001, Sean along with Kevin Iro, Paul Newlove and Anthony Sullivan formed quite possibly St. Helens` most experienced ever three-quarter line. The club had its finest hour when they unexpectedly defeated Brisbane Broncos 20-18 in the World Club Challenge and later went on to win the Challenge Cup, by defeating Bradford Bulls 13-6 at Twickenham. Sean`s input in these triumphs was immense and only a crippling injury list ended any hope Saints had of winning their third consecutive Super League crown.

During the memorable 2002 season, Sean played most of his football on the wing. He was one of Saints` fittest players, who has proved to be the perfect role model for some the club`s up and coming youngsters. The example he sets and respect that he is shown is a testimony to his professionalism. In 2002, he was a beaten Challenge Cup finalist at Murrayfield and a vital member of last weekend`s Super League Grand Final winning team.

Prior to joining St. Helens, Sean played Down Under in the Winfield Cup. He played for Canberra Raiders (1992-1993), Norths (1994) and Auckland Warriors (1995-1999). He scored a record 17 tries in 33 Test Matches for New Zealand, was a member of the 1993 Kiwi Tour Party to Europe and was an itegral part of New Zealand`s 1995 World Cup Squad. In the 2000 World Cup he was a member of the Aotearoa Maoris Squad. In the 1997 World Club Championship he scored no fewer than 8 tries in his 8 matches. During his phenomenal playing career he has been one of the best wingers in the world. Not only was he named as New Zealand Player of the Year in 1993 and held the Auckland Warriors` record for tries in a season with 19, scored in their inaugural 1995 campaign for donkeys` years.

At 31 years of age, he announced that he was to retire at the end of the 2002 season. However, injuries to key players on the 2002 New Zealand touring squad provided a farewell opportunity in the Third Test against Great Britain at Central Park on November 23rd., 2002. In 97 appearances for the Saints Sean scored 36 tries, kicked no goals for an aggregate points total of 144.

To play against New Zealand, for St. Helens at the end of the 2002 was to be a very special way for Sean will end his career. In his three years with the St. Helens club he has took part in seven major finals, winning five, and has become one of the team`s best loved stars. Sean`s influence, during this period, had been immense and his absence, in the 2003 season, left a huge void.
