Biography of Arthur Holsgrove

HERITAGE NO : 407

Arthur Holsgrove by Alex Service

The Saints were rebuilding somewhat in the early to middle 1930s. The club was in serious financial trouble and many big names, such as Alf Ellaby, Jack Arkright were sold off to help to improve the situation. At one stage, while high-profile players were disappearing to other clubs, the Saints would give trials to any number of players, especially those from rugby union. In one game, against Rochdale Hornets, on 22nd April 1933, there were three trialists due to play in the First Team, all from Wales. The following week, against Castleford at Knowsley Road, another two players were given trials. One player, in particular, known as A N Other, was successful and really took the eye of the Saints’ Committee. The St. Helens Newspaper reported the aftermath:

“Ginger will play for Saints, no longer a mystery man. So Ginger will play for St. Helens next season. Ginger, of course, is the young man who gained fame in a night, or rather in shortly more than an hour’s play in the match against Castleford. No longer cloaked by the pseudonym of A N Other he comes out of his shell in the person of Arthur Holsgrove, exceptionally well-known on Merseyside as a boxer. In Don Volante’s benefit programme recently, Holsgrove boxed with Don Mc Korkindale. Holsgrove, we understand, has undergone a very slight operation on his toe and is making a good recovery. Jim Turner, the Secretary of the Supporters Club first introduced Ginger to the Committee and persuaded them to give him a trial. Holsgrove approached Mr. Turner in the dressing room of the Liverpool Stadium and asked if he could be fixed up with a trial game. Knowing his man, Jim leapt at the opportunity with much happy results.”

Arthur’s best season was in 1933-34 when he played in 27 matches and scored a try. He was at number 10, with veteran front-rower Bob Atkin on the other side. In between them was hooker Dave Cotton, father of Fran, of Rugby Union fame. Thomas played 10 matches in 1935-36, alternating between the front and second row. He worked in Birkenhead as a Dock Labourer. In 1939 he was living in Russell Street, Birkenhead. He died in Birkenhead in October 1995, aged 84. If anyone has any information about this particular player, we would like to hear from them.
