 HERITAGE NO : 707 Doug Holland by SHS Doug Holland came from Haydock and his powerful physique meant that he could operate effectively both in the front and second rows. He was a stalwart of the Saints A Team from many years, before leaving to join Hull KR. Doug took up residence in East Yorkshire as a result. Signed in February 1950, he made his First Team debut against Leigh on New Year’s Day 1952 at Knowsley Road when Saints won 9-0. The front row that afternoon was Holland, Owen Moore and Whittaker. His final appearance came on 5th September 1953, in the first leg of a Lancashire Cup clash at Barrow. Saints lost 12-13 but won the second leg 21-17. Doug played blind-side prop that day, with Prescott and hooker Reg Blakemore making up the front row. Doug died in Chester in January 2014 at the age of 85. |
