Biography of William Hodgson

HERITAGE NO : 193
One of a veritable raft of forwards to have joined the Saints from Cumberland, William Hodgson signed from Brookland Rovers and made his debut against Treherbert on 9th October at Knowsley Road. He played in the forwards, alongside another Cumbrian debutant, Tom Crellin. The forward pack read: Bradley, Prescott, Walker, Briers, Crellin and Hodgson. The Saints won 36-12, including a marvellous hat-trick from flying winger Jimmy Flanagan. The correspondent New Boy, in the St. Helens Newspaper was quite enthusiastic about the club's new captures: 'I am convinced that in Crellin and Hodgson, the club have a couple of good hard-working scrummagers. They were always to the fore in loose open work on Saturday. Crellin, by the way, is considered one of the best captures ever made by a Lancashire Northern Union club. Both he and Hodgson are clearly well built youths and their inclusion certainly did not diminish the efficiencies of the pack'.

Despite the promise in the paper that Hodgson was 'a forward of repute up north', the match against Treherbert was his first and last for the seniors. Crellin also was to disappear from the scene and re-appeared for the Saints a year later.
