Eric Hesketh was clearly a favourite of the fans, as Denis Whittle recalls: "Eric was the son of George Hesketh, who was the Chairman of Wigan at the time. (who was in the decorating business) He was a dainty kind of player, with a brilliant sidestep. He could pivot on a penny and could run at the defence. He was a stand-off in the classical mode, who relied on guile rather than power to make his breaks. Dark-haired and handsome, Saints signed him from Batley and amazingly he never played for Wigan, despite his father`s presence there. He was a real crowd-pleaser who played the game in the mould of Stan McCormick. He was a good passer of the ball, who played at stand-off when Jimmy Honey played scrum-half."

Eric played originally with Wigan Old Boys Rugby Union before joining Leeds, his first professional club. Eric made 49 appearances for the Saints scoring 13 tries and kicking 6 goals. A great attacking player, he provided great entertainment in the early post-war era when the Saints were on the fringes of becoming a real power in the game. Eric left to join Salford late in 1951. His cavalier style certainly endeared him to the Knowsley Road faithful. In 1939 Eric was a Clerk in a Gunpowder Factory and living in City Road, Orrell. He died in Ince, Wigan in March 1994, aged 72.
