Ernest Helsby was born in the Farnworth district of Widnes on 14th December 1880 and was signed by the Saints from the Widnes Wesley Guild association team. He was described by the St.Helens Newspaper as 'a well-built fellow, who Runcorn and Widnes have tried to sign on.'

He had played association football for the Widnes Wesley Guild for a number of years up to 1908 when he won the Liverpool Shield and his team had joined the West Cheshire Football League. In 1907, his team had won the Zingari League as well as the Liverpool Cup.

He was a back-row forward, who made his debut at home to Leigh on 14th November 1908 in a 10-8 victory, making 24 appearances during the campaign overall. He made a further 19 appearances in the second row during the 1909-10 season, yet for whatever reason he only played in the last two fixtures of 1910-11, at loose forward. Ernest was a train driver by profession, a job which he loved according to his great grandson Richard. That was essentially the end of his career at Knowsley Road. Ernie was living in Leigh Avenue, Widnes in 1939.He became the father-in-law of Widnes loose forward Jimmy Hoey, who played against Saints when Widnes beat them at Wembley in 1930, one of the biggest-ever shocks in the Challenge Cup. He died in Widnes in August 1953 aged 72.
