Biography of Albert Heath

HERITAGE NO : 313
Albert Heath by Dave Dooley and Adrian Lawrenson

Albert was a hard running, tough tackling second row forward who played for the Saints in the early 1920s. The second row player was snapped up by the Saints after starring in the St Helens YMCA team which won the prestigious Amateur Cup in 1922. His grand daughter, Sue, forwarded us an image of his medal which we have placed in his gallery. He was a prolific try scorer for the Saints and netted 20 tries in his 98 matches. This haul included braces against Salford and Keighley. Albert also has a fair turn of pace and this was illustrated in his penultimate game for the Saints when he donned the number two jersey against Warrington. He was a Colliery worker operating above ground. In 1939 he was living in Mill Lane, Sutton, St Helens. Albert and his wife remained in Mill Lane all their lives. His grand daughter, Sue, advised us that Albert moved from the coal face to operate as an Asbestos worker.

An examination of Albert’s playing record from the 1926 to 1927 season seems to indicate that he was unlucky to lose out on a place in the team which lifted the Lancashire Cup in November, 1926. Albert was a regular member of the team throughout the start of the campaign up to the 30th of October 1926. Moreover, he had crossed for an impressive five tries in those games. Following this date, Albert did not appear for the first team until early December intimating that he could well have sustained an injury which would have robbed him of a place in the first ever Saints team to lift a major trophy.

Albert continued to be a regular member of both the first and second teams for the rest of that season and the following campaign. Indeed Albert picked up a winner’s medal, see gallery below, as a key member of the side that lifted the Lancashire Senior Competition Championship in 1927.

He died in St Helens in December 1971, aged 71. Albert was married to Eveline Mercer and they had one daughter Eileen who moved to live in Southport. Albert’s brother, Robert, was a prominent shopkeeper in Lugsmore Lane, Thatto Heath, St Helens.

Adrian Lawrenson researched a most illustrative biography of Albert Heath from an extract from the St Helens v Rochdale Hornets Programme for 28 March 1925 seems to sum up Albert’s value to the Saints’ team at the time.

Age 24 Height 6ft 0ins Weight 13st 2lbs

Albert Heath first commenced to play rugby football with the St Helens YMCA team about 1919-20 season. Whilst there he engaged in the preliminary rounds of the Northern Union Challenge Cup the YMCA beating Moss Hall by 8pts to 6pts afterwards losing to Pemberton Rovers. Signed on for our club about Xmas 1922 and turned out first with the A Team against Wigan Highfield A following this with a match against Broughton A. He certainly made a successful debut as he was included in the First Team against Wigan on Boxing Day 1922. Alf Frodsham was also making his debut on that auspicious occasion.

Wigan won by 3 goals 1 try to 1 try but Bert Hilton was hurt in the early part of the match leaving our five forwards to make the best of it and Heath’s part of the game was no mean one. Many good games have been played by him for the old club and one that stands in his favour was the Broughton match of last season Heath scoring six minutes from time with a fine individual burst.

The gallery includes a photo of Albert’s grand daughter, Sue Morton, proudly holding his Heritage Certificate. She is the proprietor of the Lemon Tree Café in Longton, Lancashire and intends to frame the Certificate along with a photo of Albert and his hard earned medals.
