Biography of Billy Hayes

HERITAGE NO : 834
Bill Hayes was an uncompromising loose forward who signed from Warrington in August 1966. He played 17 matches for the club and kicked two goals in the away victory over Barrow in September 1966. Billy began his rugby career with the Orford Tannery junior club, before turning professional with Warrington in 1961.

The 1966-67 season started with Tommy Bishop, Cliff Watson and John Mantle still in Australia on tour and on top of this, Kel Coslett picked up an injury in the Gallie Cup game against Swinton. With the league programme about to get under way, in August 1966, the Saints swooped for Warrington-born William [Billy] Hayes, for who he turned professional in 1961.

Billy, who had started his career with Orford Tannery junior club, was a member of the Warrington pack and went on to record 17 appearances in the Saints team, playing his first game at Naughton Park in the 10-10 draw with Widnes on 19 August 1966 [when Saints fought back after a 10-0 deficit] and made his last appearance against his hometown club Warrington in the Lancashire Cup final curtain raiser on 27 September 1967 in a 17-12 victory. Billy was also a useful emergency goal-kicker and after Len Killeen missed the Barrow game on 12 September 1966, he stepped into the breach with two goals before being replaced injured himself in a 15-9 away win. And then there was one for the collector, as John Mantle landed the third goal!

Billy, it could be argued, was a short-term signing to help the Saints through a shortage of forwards and with the establishment of Kel Coslett as a loose forward and the later emergence of Eric Chisnall, the return to fitness of John Mantle, young local lads like Brian Hogan and Joe Robinson in contention, Billy found the competition for places too great and he drifted out of the game.If you can suppl a photo of Billy please contact us.
