By the early 1920s, the Saints had found the recruitment of local talent somewhat difficult, in competition with the St Helens Recs and turned to Wales in a concerted effort to bolster the strength of the squad. One of the first arrivals was Gus Hayes, a speedy, skilful winger or centre who was signed from Pontypool RUFC. He made his debut against Featherstone Rovers on 25 March 1922, when two other Welshmen, Stan and George Lewis, also played their first game for the club in the halves.

A strong-running and powerful threequarter, Gus scored a total of 14 tries for the Saints and kicked one goal during his two years at Knowsley Road. His try haul included a hat trick against Salford on 21 April 1923 and a brace in the Challenge Cup victory over amateur outfit Norwood.

In total Gus played 61 matches before his transfer to Salford at the start of the 1924-25 campaign, where he played in 27 matches for the Reds until the end of March 1925. He then returned to his roots in South Wales, where he would have not been allowed to play in the 15-a-side code back in the Valleys.

The 1939 Census sees Gus as an accountant and partner in the Cardiff firm of Allen and Lamb Accounts. He was living in Ty-Gwyn Crescent, Cardiff and died in September 1977 at the age of 81.
