 HERITAGE NO : 969 Paul joined the Saints before the start of the 1984-85 campaign, essentially as a stand off. After impressing in a friendly against Mansfield Marksmen, however, First Team opportunities were few and far between. He played one game for the seniors, against Bradford Northern at Odsal, where he was back substitute and in January 1985 he was loaned to Rochdale Hornets. Paul returned to the Saints a few weeks later to conclude the season as fellow Aussies Mal Meninga and Phil Veivers enjoyed great success in becoming the Premiership Trophy winners. Paul later became a successful coach and conditioner in both codes of rugby and has an impressive CV of clubs, including the Junior All Blacks, Canberra Raiders, Wests Tigers, Manawatu, North Brisbane RFC and the Mackay Cutters in the Queensland Cup. Hammer informed us that as 2020 he had a coaching role with Wynnum Manly RLFC which was then the pre-eminent development club in Queensland. Despite the lack of opportunities at the Saints Paul looks back fondly on the time spent in Northern England. He maintained contact with players from those days including Harry Pinner, Mal Meninga, Chris Arkwright, Neil Holding, Steve Peters and Paul Loughlin. Dave Dooley | ||||
