 HERITAGE NO : 486 Bert Hampson by Alex Service A local lad, who lived in Speakman Road, Bert was a stand-off who could also play in the threequarters if necessary. He joined the Saints from St. Helens Recs just after the start of the 1938-39 campaign. He made his debut against Widnes on 3rd September at Knowsley Road. Unfortunately the Chemics won 11-6. Although it was not exactly a case of out of the frying pan into the fire, the Saints, just like the Recs, were struggling for players and desperate to put a series of good results together. As we all know, the Recs went under at the end of the season. Saints, the town team, survived, but it was touch and go during those austere couple of years before the start of the Second World War. Bert played in 17 matches all told for the Saints and scored 5 tries. His best run was shortly after joining the club. Later on, Jackie Bradbury took over the stand-off berth and was later superseded by another former Recs player, Frank Tracey, who would soon play for England against France at Knowsley Road. In 1939 Bert was working as a Glass Examiner and living in Speakman Road, St Helens. He died in St Helens in March 1983, aged 68.
