 HERITAGE NO : 986 Steve Halliwell was a classy centre with superb finishing skills. Although he was born in Ince he emigrated as an infant to Australia. His father was the former Wigan back Frank Halliwell. Steve initially played Rugby Union and was the Vice Captain of the Australian Schoolboys RU Team. He played rugby League for three Australian clubs St George, Parramatta and Penrith in the early 1980s before returning to Blighty to try his hand. At the Saints his 16 tries in just 22 matches was so impressive. This try haul included three hat tricks against Leeds, Carlisle and Barrow and two braces in matches with Hull KR and Warrington. He was signed from Leigh in 1986 where he had cemented his tryscoring reputation. Nevertheless, a barren period in midwinter saw Steve crossing the Pennines to join Wakefield Trinity barely four months after his debut. Very much a case of short and sweet. Dave Dooley | ||||
