The half-back combination at Knowsley Road at the turn of the century sounded like a firm of solicitors, Banks and Hall, both lads, apparently from the Pocket Nook district of St. Helens and products of the famous Cinder Field. The 1901 Census tells us that Tom was a boarder in a house in Graham Street, St. Helens and that he was 21 years of age at the time. He was still born locally, however and it was not unusual for people to be billeted out in this fashion. Tom was a good footballer, with clever hands and a capable boot who dovetailed in nicely with his half-back partner Ralph Banks. The dynamic duo made their debuts together, Tom at stand-off, Ralph at scrum-half, against Brighouse Rangers on 27th September 1902. It was not a good time for the St. Helens club. By the end of the campaign, Brighouse were bottom of the league, with St. Helens above them and both clubs went into the Second Division in 1903-04.

Fortunately, with Tom playing more in the scrum-half berth, the Saints gained promotion after a Test Match against Holbeck and would have regained their place in the First Division but for further reorganisation of the league structure which saw one league re-appear. Alas, Toms appearances like those of his half-back partner became more spasmodic in 1904-05 and he played his last game on 3rd November 1906 against Widnes at Knowsley Road. His total of 73 matches, 4 tries and 33 goals mirrors his overall ability and his worthwhile contribution to a time when things were far from rosy at Knowsley Road.
