Biography of Jack Grundy |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 674 Jack Grundy was from a strong rugby playing family. His father famously played for rivals St Helens Recs during their golden years. This skilful, hard running second row forward was also a reliable goal kicker. Indeed Jack booted over 6 goals in the 39 points to 2 demolition of Bramley in October 1949. In 1939 Jack was living in Lincoln Crescent, St. Helens. Jack moved to Barrow in 1950 where he continued a successful career with the shipbuilders. He must have liked the Furness air because Jack stayed there for the rest of his life, dying in March 1978, aged 51. Dave Dooley Jack Grundy by SHS There was certainly plenty of rugby in his DNA. His father, Harry Grundy was a tremendously fast and effective back-rower with the famous St Helens Recreation team just after the First World War. After impressing in the local amateur leagues with UGB and New Church Tavern, he played for the A team initially, making his debut against the visiting Australians in 1948-49 when Saints recorded a memorable 10-8 victory. His partners in the back row were Welshman George Parsons and the redoubtable local lad Tommy Stott at loose forward. Jack, who more often than not wore a scrum-cap, was a real hard-worker in the loose, who could also kick goals if needed and booted over 6 in one match against Bramley. In the 1949-50 campaign, he found himself embroiled with four matches in the Challenge Cup against Halifax and Bradford Northern, before he played what was to be his final game for the club against Workington at Derwent Park, when Saints lost 0-5. His back-row partners that day were Eddie Cheetham and Alan Prescott at loose forward. He joined Barrow for £1,000 and went on to win the Lance Todd trophy with the Shipbuilders after beating rivals Workington in the 1954-55 Challenge Cup final. County and international recognition soon followed and Jack was a member of Great Britain’s successful World Cup winning squad in 1954. He passed away in Barrow in 1978. Jack’s brother Ken also played professionally for Saints A team and Liverpool City, eventually becoming Secretary of that club for many years. |
