Biography of Aubrey Gregory

HERITAGE NO : 606
Aubrey Gregory by SHS

A speedy winger, originally from the Union Inn, Oldfield Street, where his mother was the licensee, Aubrey was an up and coming young player at both football and rugby league, particularly with the New Church Tavern amateurs in the local competition. Saints duly signed him and Aubrey made his debut against Halifax at Thrum Hall on 15 April 1944, on the right wing in what were difficult times for the St Helens club. The visitors lost 4-46, but fortunately there were somewhat brighter times ahead for the team.

He became a fixture in the seniors for a few years and was one of the few who progressed from the War Emergency League competition to the first full season when the game resumed in earnest in 1945-46. One of his best performances was on Christmas Day 1945 when the Saints beat Liverpool Stanley 26-3 at the Stanley Dog Track. His centre that day was a member of another great St Helens sporting family, Tom Waring. His last match for the Saints, unfortunately like his first, ended in a 10-32 defeat against Wakefield Trinity at Belle Vue. He was on the left flank this time, with Jack Cox as his centre.

Later Aubrey joined Liverpool Stanley, who had former Saints players like Jackie Bradbury, Eddie Lea and Harold Forsyth in their ranks, before injury ended his career. Daughter Christine has given us some invaluable extra information about Aubrey and another extended family link with the Saints.

“Dad was a pupil at Higher Grade School, St. Helens. I do know that he joined Liverpool Stanley after playing for the Saints. He finished professional rugby with Liverpool Stanley after a knee cartilage injury – I think that was playing against Bradford Northern at Odsal. In the early days, he was landlord of the Lion Hotel, Higher Parr Street. A lot of the family were licensees. Berlin Barnes was Aubrey’s uncle, as was Gerald Barnes, who kept the Grapes Hotel, in Eccleston Park and subsequently the Star Inn in Rainford. (They were two of my Grandmother’s brothers nee Barnes). She had 7 brothers in all. As children they lived at the Mill House in Rainford.”

Aubrey died in St Helens in July 1998, aged 72. Saints Heritage Society would like to thank Christine and Lesley for the extra information and the superb images of their father’s sporting career.
