Tommy Gormley by Alex Service

Tommy Gormley was a forceful winger or centre threequarter who cut his rugby league teeth by playing for the famous Pocket Nook Shamrocks. Signed by the Saints from Warrington, he played one match in the 1918-19 season, when he was right centre to Henry Greenall. In 1919-20 he played 21 times for the Saints and scored 8 tries, mostly as a right centre. In his final season at Knowsley Road, 1920-21, he made 12 starts and scored 4 tries.

He joined local rivals St.Helens Recreation, who were themselves in the League at the time. He went on to win a Lancashire Cup winners medal with the City Road outfit when they beat mighty Swinton 17-0. Tommy was on the right wing that day, with Jimmy Owen as his centre.

At one time he was the licensee of the Victoria Hotel in Pocket Nook Street and after retiring from that position due to a run-in with the Police, he worked at Greenall Whitley's building yard in Hardy Street. His family have many great tales to relate about Tommy. A speculative gambler, he once won enough money one Saturday to buy a Chip Shop the following week. They recall how he arose early to walk to the Central Station to collect the fresh fish from the train.

In 1950 he met with an accident and suffered a broken thigh. Tommy died at his home in Parr Street in July 1952 at the age of 57. Recs team-mates and officials were the bearers at his funeral: Joe Bates, Frank Bowen, Bob Large (Committee) and Billy Ashall - a fine tribute to a more than capable footballer, who came from one of the most fertile sporting areas of the town.
