Biography of Mick Glover

HERITAGE NO : 944
As an Edmund Campion schoolboy Mick Glover was a distinguished hooker and was an enthusiastic Town Team representative. He graduated through the ranks at the Saints having played for St Helens Colts. Mick played his first game in Saints colours came in the George Nicholls Testimonial against Pilkington Recs in August 1979. This game attracted 8000 spectators which was at the attendance levels of prestigious matches against the likes of Wigan and Australia at the time. In his first spell with the club his only first team match came against arch rivals Wigan in a 20 points to 17 home league victory on Good Friday 1980. Mick played hooker in this match. Glover also played for the Saints in six friendly matches during this spell.

Mick was loaned to Widnes in 1980 and then Warrington in 1981. On his return to his hometown club he played against the one of the finest , if not the finest Kangaroo touring teams- the 1982 Australian Invincibles containing some of the finest and most famous superstars ever to pull on a Kangaroo shirt, including our own mighty Mal Meninga. Saints lost by 32 points to nil but the occasion will live forever in the minds of those who played in, officiated and witnessed the match that day. In this second spell at Knowsley Road. Mick played hooker for the Saints in matches against Oldham, Salford, Wigan and Widnes.

After his Saints and Bridgend days Mick pursued a career in the RAF but retained his love for the game and became a prominent figure in the local amateur game. Mick played for Haydock and Thatto Heath. He also played for UGB in the NW Counties leagues in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Another former Saint and a pal of Mick, Derrick Seabrook was the Head Player Coach at UGB. Derrick brought Mick down to pass on some of his knowledge and experience to the lads. He played for a number of seasons and the team achieved back to back promotions.

In the late 1990s Mick was appointed as first team coach at Blackbrook ARLFC in the National Conference League. Outside rugby he also owned the gym in Station Road, Haydock for a spell. Later in life Mick went to live in Spain where he sadly passed away in May 2011 aged 51.

Mick always wanted a Viking style burial. His family made a small wooden ship which they painted white and to top it off they also painted a red V on it and the number 9. His ashes on the ship were released into the Mediterranean Sea providing Mick with his Viking burial with a capital RED V. Mick Glover a true Saint in life and spirit.

Thanks to Paul Devanney and other Redvee posters for providing rugby career information and personal tributes to Mick Glover.

His two fine sons can be seen in the gallery below receiving Mick's Heritage Number Certificate.
