John Gladwin by Alex Service

The first mention of John Gladwin is not from St. Helens, but Aldershot. It appears that his father, James, was a sergeant in the army and his address is given as 'District Regiment of 94th Foot and 45th Dept Foot Centre Block Infantry Barracks'. John's actual place of birth was Dover, in 1869. His father came from Hulme and for whatever reason, John ended up in St. Helens by 1891, getting married to Margaret five years before.

Fast forward to the 1901 census and John is described as a 'bleaching powder packer' living in Eldon Street, off Borough Road in St. Helens. In rugby terms, he made his Saints' debut against Kendal Hornets in the rugby union days and racked up over 200 matches before the famous 1895-96 campaign. Indeed, John was in the team that played Rochdale Hornets at Knowsley Road in the first-ever Northern Union fixture and was a rugged forward and a capable scrummager, who would never let his side down. He scored a try against Halifax on 11th January 1896 and played his last game for the Blue and Whites in a 6-5 victory against Swinton at Knowsley Road on 14th January 1899. The forward pack that day read as follows: Briers, Dale, Caveney, Gladwin, Stubbings, Tom Winstanley, Simpson and Reynolds.

The 1911 census has the Gladwin family living in Borough Road and there are 7 children by this time. John was 42 by this time. He passed away in March 1942 aged 73.
