 HERITAGE NO : 954 Bryan Gelling by Alex Service A real handful, whether in the front or second row, Bryan was a powerful man who was a stalwart in the St. Helens A Team for several years and could always be relied upon to give of his best when called up into the Firsts. The former Bold Miners amateur made his debut on 3rd March 1982, when the club in general was at a distinctly low ebb. The Saints beat Featherstone Rovers 14-4 at Knowsley Road but there were just 2,932 fans there to see it. Bryan was the substitute forward that day and the starting forward pack was as follows: Bolton, Liptrot, Moorby, Bottell, Gorley and Haggerty. Bryan went on to make 5 full appearances for the Saints and 10 from the bench. He actually went to Whitehaven on loan on two occasions in the 1984-85 campaign and his last game for the St. Helens First Team was in the Lancashire Cup second round tie at Barrow on 26th September 1984. The Saints won 26-10 in relatively comfortable fashion and Bryan started in the front-row, together with Tony Burke and hooker Graham Liptrot. Bryan went on to join Leigh and played no less than 60 matches, scoring 10 tries, from 1985-87. | ||||
