A signing from the Blackbrook amateur club on 21st October 1963, Peter was a durable scrum-half who generally played in the A Team at Knowsley Road, but was good enough to play in 22 matches in the First Team in his five-year spell at Knowsley Road. Peter made his debut at Wakefield Trinity on 23rd March 1965, with Alex Murphy as his stand-off! Saints lost 4-5 and Peter's best run in the First Team was in the 1967-68 season, when he played in 11 matches, some at stand-off.

A real St.Helens stalwart, his last match for the club was against Widnes at Naughton Park. Alan Whittle was his stand-off. Saints lost 9-17 and Peter was to follow his former team-mate Frank Myler to Rochdale Hornets in August 1971 for a '300 transfer fee. Looking at some of the half-backs around at Knowsley Road during Peter's time at the club is an interesting exercise. Names like Wilf Smith, Murphy, Ian Jones, Tommy Bishop, Bob Prosser, Rhodes, Whittle, Jeff Heaton and Ken Kelly were some of the main contenders for places during those five years.

Peter later returned to Knowsley Road as Assistant Coach to Billy Benyon, when the Saints won the Lancashire Cup and Premiership Trophy ' the famous 'Meninga' season.
