Biography of Max Garbler

HERITAGE NO : 686

Max Garbler by Alex Service and Dave Dooley

Max signed for the Saints from the Randwick Rugby Union club in Sydney. He was essentially a back-row forward and he faced competition from the likes of Welshman Ray Cale, George Parsons and Vince Karalius. Max spent quite a lot of his time playing in the A Team, although he had quite lengthy spells in the First Team too. In 1950-51 he made 17 appearances and the following season 23, his best for the club, mostly at loose forward. Max did not figure in any matches during Jim Sullivans first season at the club, in 1952-53 and looked to have a limited future in First Grade. He moved on to Warrington, on loan, where he made 4 appearances, together with 2 matches for Leigh. [Heritage Number 629] Yet he was nothing if not durable and bounced back with 18 appearances and 5 tries in 1955-56 for St Helens, although he was not selected for the Wembley squad. He made his final appearance at Hull on 15th September 1956, when the Saints lost 6-17. The back row that day was Gaskell, Delves and Garbler.

He was a popular figure in St Helens and he was married there in 1951. The image in the gallery below shows an article which appeared in the St Helens Reporter in the mid fifties. It clearly reflects the great spirit of adventure which Max must have possessed. He returned to Australia in 1957.

We believe that he did some coaching Down Under with one of the Sydney clubs for a spell. We know that Max coached a University team in Sydney and was highly praised for his knowledge and direction. Our gallery shows a photo of Max and his team who reached the 1975 Sydney Metropolitan Finals. You may note the ball boy who was Craig Garbler, doubtless a relation you would think. Max was brought up in the Bondi Junction area of Sydney but on his return he settled in Belmore, deep in Bulldogs territory, where he lived with his wife, Doreen and son. Max worked as a draftsman in Sydney.
