 HERITAGE NO : 977 Brett French by Alex Service Brett, known as 'Bert' began with Wynnum Manly in Queensland, the Seagulls, where his team-mates included the likes of Miles, Lewis, Wittenberg and Lindner, all famous names in Australian Rugby League folklore. A fast, incisive centre threequarter, he was a Queensland representative from 1983-88 and was a member of the Queensland squad that made a ground-breaking tour to the UK in 1983. Brett signed for the Saints for the 1985-86 campaign and became a favourite with the crowd with his pace at left centre, scoring 14 tries in 24 appearances. The other overseas players at Knowsley Road at the time were Aussie Ross Conlon and Kiwi centre Mark Elia. Unfortunately the dominance of Wigan prevented the Saints from winning any major trophies, but the team was still capable of playing some excellent attacking football. Brett played his last match at Dewsbury, when his winger was local lad Denis Litherland, when the visitors won 18-12, but he also partnered Kevin Meadows on the left flank. Brett's career Down Under also included spells with North Sydney, for whom he made 65 appearances and the Gold Coast, where he made 35 starts. His brother Ian, who was also a State of Origin representative, was a powerful second-rower who enjoyed a successful spell with Castleford. |
