Biography of Roy Free |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 614 Free by Alex Service This person played just the one game for the First Team, during a substantial 31-2 defeat at Dewsbury. It should be noted that Dewsbury, under their General Manager Eddie Waring, recruited much top talent to boost their team during the War years, including several players from St. Helens, such as Jackie Bradbury and Harry Pimblett. Anyhow, as far as Free was concerned the local press does throw some light on the matter of his selection on the left wing that afternoon at Crown Flatt. He is described as: 'a youngster who had played two matches with the juniors,' and 'was picked up just before St. Helens left.' Apparently he was also a local boxer of some renown and had gone to the rugby at the expense of a tournament on the same day. In 1939 he was living in Thorn Road, St Helens. Roy died in St Helens in October 1999 at the age of 71. Many thanks to Roy’s son, Richard, for the marvellous images of his father. |
