Biography of Ted Forshaw |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 744 Ted was born in Gerards Bridge, St Helens and attended Holy Cross School. He was a blacksmith by trade and a great all-round sportsman. His CV included Everton and Prescot Cables in the round ball code and Pilkingtons Recs and the Saints in the greatest game of them all. His soccer exploits also took him to Canada. Ted made a spectacular start to his first team career at the Saints when he scored two tries and kicked 3 goals in a 28 points to 8 home victory over Huddersfield on August 21st, 1957. However, this promising start was soon to have an abrupt end just five games later in the away fixture at Leigh on New Years Day 1958. On a day when he played centre to the great Tommy Voll, Ted tragically broke his jaw. The injury failed to mend properly and he was forced to turn his attentions to soccer once again. Ted was a very speedy centre and accurate goalkicker. Ted famously played for Prescot Cables in the 1961 FA Cup competition. His flying header against Altrincham before a Hope Street crowd of some 4000 propelled the Cables into the first round proper of that competition for the only time in the clubs history. Teds fleet of foot proved invaluable in local athletics circles as well. He performed superbly for Sutton Harriers and Pilkingtons AC before helping to set up St Helens Athletics Club in 1980. This popular character was later to return to Knowsley Road as a weight training and sprinting coach with the Saints. Iin 1939 Ted was living in Broad Oak Road, Parr, St Helens and still attending school. In June 2002 Ted sadly died in St Helens at the age of 70. He left behind his wife Dorothy, children Neil and Lynne and grandchildren Emma and Kate. Dave Dooley (Thanks to Stephen Anders for the information on Ted) |
