Biography of Christopher Flynn
HERITAGE NO : 69 Christopher Flynn, who lived in Old Atlas Street in Parr, before moving to Peckers Hill Road, according to the 1939 census, played two matches for the Saints on consecutive weeks as a left centre early in the 1898-99 season. His first game was at home to a powerful Broughton Rangers side, when he was part of a threequarter line with the likes of Dave Traynor, Barnes and Liversage. Legendary forward Billy Briers was switched to the halves on the day but couldn’t prevent the visitors winning 3-13. The following week it was away at Warrington, when the Saints lost narrowly 3-0. Christopher accompanied Albert Siddall on the left flank. Further details about Christopher have been provided by his great granddaughter Sue O’Reilly: “He worked his entire career on the railways, starting off as a loco engine cleaner and working his way up to become a train driver. He was born in Liverpool to Irish migrant parents and moved to St Helens in the fourth quarter of the 19th century. He married and had five children and lived in St Helens until his death in 1958.” Whether Christopher continued to play rugby in the A team at Knowsley Road is not known, or if he played elsewhere. “As fans, we were absolutely delighted to discover we had a relative who’d played for Saints,” added Sue. “We didn’t know about it until we started to research the family tree.” The SHS would like to thank Sue for her valuable input.
