Biography of Tommy Flynn



HERITAGE NO : 305
This talented Welshman played 122 matches for the Saints from August 1922 to November 1925. Tommy was a very versatile player and progressed from the threequarters to play regularly at scrum half for the men from Knowsley Road. His 38 tries and 5 goals was a very impressive points haul for the club. This try collection included four tries against Wigan Highfield in 1922 and later hat tricks against Salford and Keighley.

Tommy moved on to Warrington in 1925 where he played regularly for the Wires and represented Wales at rugby league. He was also the Groundsman at Wilderspool for many years. In 1939 he was living in Grafton Street, Warrington and working as a Builder's Labourer. He died in Warrington in June 1974 aged 78. His wife died in Warrington in 1992. We know that they had one son, Jack Flynn, born in Pontypool in December 1922. He was a motor mechanic living in Warrington with his parents in 1939. We would be delighted to hear from any descendants of Tommy or Jack.

Tom Flynn first commenced playing football as an out-half at the age of 14 for Talywain Alexandra. An older member of the same team was Danny Hurcombe who played centre threequarter. Flynn’s first season in senior football was 1919 then playing out-half for Talywain. When Danny Hurcombe came back from the Army, Flynn was moved to centre, Hurcombe operating at fly-half until he went to Wigan. Flynn then remained at centre threequarter and Talywain won the Mon-League for two years in succession and Championship seasons 1920-21 and 1921-22. Flynn got his first medal but lost the second one through coming to St Helens.

He first played for us as a centre – 3 matches – and was afterwards placed on the wing scoring many fine tries at Flynn’s corner during that season and part of last season. During the memorable Wardley match, Geo Lewis was injured and Flynn went to out-half being very successful. Geo Lewis stayed on the field kicking goals by request. Flynn’s great ability is beyond question and all supporters are sincerely hoping he will jump right back to form today.
