Biography of Arthur Fisher |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 223 Arthur Fisher by SHS Signed from Douglas Bank in the Wigan Junior League, Arthur played 21 matches for the Saints from October 1912 to April 1919. His first game for the club was in the league against Widnes, at Knowsley Road, when he appeared in the left wing position. Saints won 21-2, but Fisher did not get on the scoresheet. The match report in the St. Helens Newspaper was quite clear as to the potential weaknesses displayed by the youngster on his debut: "With regard to Fisher, he may be a very promising lad but it is no use pretending he is good enough for the First Team and the sooner Jimmy Flanagan is fit and well the better it will be. Fisher cannot play on the left wing, even if Flanagan is off, for the simple reason that he can only pass with his right hand and when he comes to give a pass to the inside man he has to put the ball into his right hand and throw it that way, a method which invariably results in forward passing". Indeed, the armchair critic's assessment did have a ring of truth about it and Fisher did not play any further matches with the seniors during the campaign. Fast forward to 1913-14 and he becomes something of a utility man, playing in the forwards, including hooker. It may well be that Military Service intervened at some point, but by the time he played his final game for Saints, against Oldham in a second round Lancashire Cup tie at Watersheddings on 12th April 1919, he was in the back row, with Harry Briers. Arthur was on the 1939 Census as living in Beech Hill Avenue, Wigan and working as a coalman. Can you help the SHS by supplying his photograph or any other personal or playing details? |
