Biography of Alf Ellaby

HERITAGE NO : 345
Alf Ellaby by Alex Service

Born in St. Helens, on 24 November 1902 and one of eight children, Alfred Henry Ellaby was destined to become a rugby league immortal, who found fame on two continents between the Wars. Cast in the classical winger’s mould at just over six feet and weighing twelve stones, Ellaby had great pace and the ability to pick up even the most wayward pass from his centre. He was a try-scoring sensation at Knowsley Road, who could always be relied upon to add an extra couple of thousand to the crowd. His pace was the real key to his success.

Ellaby flew in for 278 touchdowns in 290 appearances for the Saints, figures exceeded only by Tom van Vollenhoven and Les Jones. Dubbed The Hat-trick King, he notched three tries on 31 occasions for the Saints, and was the first player to score a half-century of tries in a season at Knowsley Road, with 55 in 40 matches in 1926/27. Alf toured Australia with both the 1928 and 1932 Great Britain squads and made 13 Test appearances overall. Capped by Lancashire on 19 occasions, he touched down 17 times for the Red Rose County. Ellaby scored after just 30 seconds in the First Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1932 and he captained his country in the first-ever international against France in Paris in 1934.

Alf ‘s first love was soccer and he was a good enough centre-half to sign as a professional for Rotherham County, until knee trouble was thought to have ended his career in his early twenties. The prognosis was rather premature, however, and on returning to St. Helens, he was practically bullied by Ted Smith, the Saints sponge man, to join in with some training sessions at Knowsley Road. He found he had a natural aptitude for the game and with his knee problem cleared up he made his First Team debut against Keighley on 27 March 1926 and scored two tries. In his second home game against Bradford Northern, he scored his first hat-trick and the tries just kept on coming. Alf’s astonishing rise to prominence included county and international recognition in his first full season, together with a Lancashire Cup Winner’s medal in the defeat of local rivals Recs 10-2 at a packed Wilderspool ground in Warrington.

He was the man to really kick-start the Saints in their quest for major honours in the mid 1920s. A veritable Crock in a Million, Alf developed an almost telepathic relationship with his centre and captain, George Lewis. Yet it didn’t matter if George threw out a high or a wide pass, it would make no difference. He possessed such amazing flexibility, that he could stoop when on the run and pick up a ball from the ground without stopping. Alf was one of seven St. Helens-based players, three from the Recs, four from the Saints, who were selected for the 1928 Great Britain tour. The Tourists won the first two Tests against the Australians at Brisbane and Sydney, with Ellaby scoring vital tries in both. The Tin Hare as the Aussies called him, scored no less than 20 tries on the tour, including four in five Test matches!

One of his biggest disappointments came after the defeat by un-fancied Widnes at Wembley, when the Saints lost 10-3, especially after his two tries helped to see off those redoubtable cup-fighters Wigan in the replayed semi-final at Mather Lane, Leigh. Alf was always critical of the team’s preparation for the final, when they should have rested instead of a whirl of different events including visiting the Houses of Parliament the evening before the game! Alf won two Lancashire League medals with the Saints, yet ironically, his international status prevented him from playing in the 1932 Championship Final, against Huddersfield at Wakefield, the club’s first-ever victory. He was already en route to Australia, with team-mate Albert Fildes.

Alf was a thoughtful, intelligent man and a true Corinthian, who detested foul play. He was always critical of some of the tactics in international football, which he considered brutal and unnecessary. Skill and guile was always the best way, as he showed in the international between England and Wales at Wigan in 1928, when he did the unthinkable and scored a hat-trick against the great Jim Sullivan! His performance that day showed what a truly great performer he was, using change of pace to great effect and the ability to stop dead in his tracks to totally bamboozle the most famous full-back in the world!

In 1934 Alf Ellaby was transferred to deadly rivals Wigan for £800. The money spelt financial security for the Saints, who were close to bankruptcy at the time. His former centre, George Lewis once told me that the club [St. Helens] was never the same after he had departed. When he scored a try for Wigan against the Saints shortly afterwards, he was positively apologetic about it. George reckoned that his heart was never really in the Wigan club. It is true to say, however, that many spectators followed Alf to Wigan such was his popularity and tremendous try-scoring ability. Ellaby returned to the Saints for a couple of years before the War, but it wasn’t quite the same. The St. Helens team was no longer the force it had been and the club was arguably in a more parlous financial state than when Alf was sold in the first place.

Alf was, at various times, the landlord of the Veevers Arms and Ardwick Hotel in Blackpool, together with the George Hotel at Garforth, becoming a Director of Castleford for a spell. A member of the Saints Past Players Hall of Fame, he lived in Garforth until his death at the age of 90 in 1993. There was to be a final twist, however, quite befitting to one of the great sporting heroes of St. Helens. His ashes were taken home on the Saints A Team coach after a match at Castleford and were later scattered on the pitch at his beloved Knowsley Road.

It was no surprise when Alf was inducted into the Saints Greatest 17 in the autumn of 2010 and he was joined by Les Fairclough, his stand-off who had done so much to keep the threequarter line moving to provide Alf with so many of his scoring opportunities.
