 HERITAGE NO : 802 Joe Egan by Adrian Lawrenson Born on 15 February 1944 in Wigan and the son of the famous Wigan legend of the same name, young Joe followed in his father’s footsteps as a hooker, making his senior debut in the 13-6 victory over Leeds on 8 December 1962. With competition for the hooking roles keen to the extreme, Joe’s first team opportunities were rare. He was in competition with Dagnall, Sayer, Burdell and Tony Karalius in his time at the club. He was essentially an A team regular who was a capable deputy when required. When Cliff Evans took over and wanted a more sophisticated style of play, Joe was selected as a loose forward for the coach’s first match, at Barrow on 15 January 1968, which indicated that the technically astute Evans saw something in Joe as a play-maker. However, Evans turned to Austin Rhodes who he signed from Swinton to use as his play-maker and Joe played his last game in the red vee against Maryport in the Lancashire Cup on 1 September 1969, before Blackpool Borough snapped him up, no doubt to help some of their inexperienced players, for a £500 fee. The fact that Joe was seven years at Saints in an such a successful era would indicate that Egan, who scored his only try at Wilderspool against Warrington on 4 September 1965, had plenty to offer as a player. The fact that his position was a specialised one and the competition for places was too strong probably went against him. Sad to report that Joe passed away in May 2020 at the age of 76. |
