 HERITAGE NO : 871 Kelvin Earl by Dave Dooley: Kel moved to Knowsley Road in February 1971 from Rochdale and was forward substitute for both the Challenge Cup and Championship finals at the end of the following season. He was a tough uncompromising forward. In 1973, Earl made a second Wembley appearance with Bradford Northern and won a John Player Trophy medal with them in 1975. Kel later played for Swinton and had a further spell with Rochdale. Kel made his debut as substitute forward in the 15 points to 8 victory over Whitehaven on the 27 February 1971. His first start for the club came in the following season at Halifax, when the Saints triumphed by 19 points to 5. His strong performance in this game and away matches at Widnes and Batley secured him a place on the bench for both the Challenge Cup and Championship finals at the end of the following season. Remarkably, in both finals Kel remained on the bench throughout the contests. In the 1972/3 season Kel was selected at prop in seven of the first eight matches. He scored tries in comfortable victories over Rochdale Hornets and Huyton before being transferred to Bradford Northern in November 1972 where he went on to make his second successive Wembley appearance in the 1973 Challenge Cup Final against Featherstone Rovers. |
